Maeda Clan Kuratomesode Women's Kimono from Japan

This is an absolutely rare find. It is a silk tomesode with the traditional 5 family crests (kamon) of the powerful Maeda clan. Absolutely my favorite family in Japanese history because of their heavy investment into the crafts that I adore. I've spent A LOT of time in Kanazawa at the museums and handicraft shops admiring their history and legacy. The eba-moyo design at the bottom of a pheasant (the national bird of Japan) is embroidered in gold and wraps around the garment. The lining has some flaws, it's rather wrinkled and it had been taken up in the middle and those stitches have been let out, leaving creases and some stitch marks. It's far more noticeable on the inside than the outside. It measures 23" from under one arm to the other across the back and 62" long. It is in good vintage condition but not without showing it's age. The thicker white silk lining is only present on the edges of the opening and sleeves to give the illusion of a full underlayer without adding significant bulk. I've left many of the stay stitches, particularly found in the lining. Just let me know if you'd like them removed and I'm happy to do so. I purchased this in Kyoto at Toji Temple from one of my favorite sellers because he has a good eye for selling kimonos that are in great condition (and he knows what I love and sometimes sets it aside). I often buy kimonos for the fabric and make it into something else but this is just in too good of condition. I brought back lots of items from Japan on my last trip (two checked bags each for free x 3 people... it was something) and I have lots more kimonos, kanzashi, obis (I have a couple of orange ones that go great with this kimono!), and purses/bags that I'll be listing as I get to them.
